Once again heavy rains in several parts of Karnataka on Tuesday night caused havoc, claiming one life in Bengaluru and leaving several areas waterlogged.

In Bengaluru, homes were flooded in several localities including Koramangala, KR Puram and Malleshwaram.

A resident of KR Puram’s RM Layout died after being electrocuted. Meenamma’s house had flooded with water. She was electrocuted to death when she went to turn off the UPS.

Her neighbours found Meenamma lying in the water and immediately informed the police and local MLA BA Basavaraju.

In Nelamangala's Alurupalya, a 50-year-old Narayanappa died after the wall of his house collapsed. Narayanappa was sleeping when the incident occurred. Alert neighbours rushed an injured Narayanappa to the Saptagiri Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

In JP Nagar, the wall of Shobha Dewflower Apartment collapsed on the main door of a house due to the downpour at around 2am. Alert neighbours informed the police, who are currently trying to rescue the four members of the family.

The downpour also resulted in the flooding of the Baiyappanahalli Metro Station. The water, which began flowing from the skywalk entered the metro station, leaving commuters waiting until the water was cleared out.

With several streets resembling flowing rivers, an ambulance, which was to transport the body of a man from MS Ramaiah Hospital on New Bel Road to his family home in Goruguntepalya was stranded due to severe waterlogging.

Lakes and rivers overflowed

The Doddabidarekallu Lake, which overflowed, flooded Andappa layout resulting in water accumulating up to 4ft on the roads.

The torrential rain led to an increase in the water level of the Arkavathy river. Officials from the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre said that for the first time in a decade, the mostly dried up Arkavathy river gushed with water.

In Nelamangala taluk, the Amanikere, Binnamangala and Sasanapura Lakes were filled to the brim, which resulted in waterlogging of up to 3ft on the Bengaluru-Mysuru Highway. The road, which is built on the wetland area of these lakes flooded with water resulting in a horrible traffic jam. Several shops, which were located on the highway were washed away due to the force of the water flow.

The compound wall of the Himalaya Drug Company, located in Nelamangala collapsed. Water entered the company’s compound through the highway’s service road and flooded the building.

Mysuru Dasara celebrations dampened

Several cultural programmes organised on day 6 of Dasara in Mysuru were cancelled due to heavy rainfall, which flooded the cultural centre—KR Kshetra.

The rain began at around 6pm and soon several food stalls which were set up as a part of the celebrations were washed away. The food items and vessels were floating in the waterlogged areas.

Hootahalli Lake, located on the outskirts of Mysuru city was filled to the brim and water began flowing into the streets. The Mini Golf Club in Mysuru too experienced waterlogging and now resembles a lake.

Homes and hospital flooded

In Davangere, the rain flooded several homes which resulted in families sleeping on the roads. The residents expressed anger at the district administration and alleged that they have not helped them despite several requests.

"We got some firewood from trees nearby and ended up cooking on the road. Several families are camping on the roads. We ate half cooked rice and half-made sambar. It has become impossible to obtain protection from the trees. The rain put out the fire we had lit," said Govindappa, a resident of Davangere.

The Kaggalipura Government Hospital in Anekal is flooded with water. The patients are being transferred to other hospitals
