Former Karnataka Chief Minister and JD(S) President HD Kumaraswamy underwent a successful valve replacement surgery on Saturday morning.

Kumaraswamy was admitted to the Apollo Hospital in Bengaluru’s Bannerghatta Road on Friday.

The surgery was conducted by Dr Satyaki Nambala, senior cardio thoracic surgeon, who specialises in complex vascular surgeries.

Doctors at Apollo Hospital said that 57-year-old had complained of excessive coughing over the past few weeks.

“The tissue valve inserted in Kumaraswmay in 2007 was replaced by a metal valve. He has responded well to the surgery and is currently stable,” a doctor at Apollo Hospital told TNM.

The 45-minute laparoscopic keyhole surgery started at around 7.45 am on Saturday.

Kumaraswamy is diabetic and had undergone an open-heart surgery in December 2007, following which he has suffered from health problems, doctors said.

“He has admitted to being highly prone to infections and allergies. During his North Karnataka tour a few weeks ago, he developed a cough after inhaling fumes emitted by fire crackers. The coughing aggravated during his recent visit to Israel, where he was advised hospitalisation,” the doctor added.

After returning to Bengaluru from Israel, the JD(S) leader consulted his cardiologist, who is also his brother-in-law, Dr CN Manjunath of the Jayadeva Hospitals. He suggested that Kumaraswamy go ahead with the valve replacement surgery.

Kumaraswamy’s wife Anitha, his son Nikhil Gowda and sister Shylaja were at the hospital. His father HD Deve Gowda, however, has been visiting several temples performing puja for his son’s recovery, a JD(S) source said.

The JD(S) supremo first visited the Shani temple in Bengaluru’s NR Colony and Karanji Anjaneyaswami temple in Basavangudi.

A Maha Mrutynjaya homa, maharudrabhisheka was performed at the Gavigangadharaswami temple. Kumaraswamy’s brother HD Revanna, MLC TA Sharavana and several JD(S) workers accompanied Deve Gowda on his temple visits.

Kumaraswamy is currently in post-operative care and will be in hospital till September 26. Doctors have advised rest for two weeks.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and BJP state President BS Yeddyurappa tweeted wishing Kumaraswamy a speedy recovery.
