Sir M Visvesvaraya was one of the most prominent engineers and exemplary statesmen that the country has ever produced.

Born on September 15, 1861, in Karnataka’s Chikkaballapur district, the Bharat Ratna recipient is known for designing one of the best flood management systems of his time.

So it’s only fit tribute to the man, counted among the last century’s foremost nation-builders, that his birth anniversary is commemorated as Engineers' Day in the country.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to Twitter on Friday, to pay tribute to Visvesvaraya and appreciate the role that engineers play in the development of the nation.

Many others also joined in to talk about why engineers in the country deserved respect.

But it’s 2017. So how could there be Engineers’ Day without a few snarky tweets and memes?
