Three members of a family were killed on Friday morning when the SUV they were travelling in toppled off an uncompleted flyover near Red hills as per a report by Sindhu Kannan in The Times of India

Two others suffered injuries as the car fell from a height of 30 feet and landed in a pit filled with rain water.

Palani, 65, his wife Naveedham, 50, and their daughter Pavithra, 26 could not be saved as they drowned in the rain water.

Pavithra’s husband Ayyappan and the driver Kandavel broke open the windows and managed to escape, the report says.

All the members were residents of Kolathur in Sriperumbudur and the family was coming back after attending an engagement ceremony at Minjur.

Locals alleged that there was no signage or barricades at the entrance of the flyover to indicate that it was under construction and the driver drove up the flyover without knowing it.

As per a report in Deccan Chronicle, other members of the family were following them in two cars and had even tried to alert them to the possible danger ahead but by then, it was too late.

“They were supposed to go towards Manimangalam. The driver took the flyover instead of the service lane,” one of the relatives of the deceased said.

A car which was right behind had a lucky escape as it stopped in time.

The bodies have been sent to the Ponneri government hospital for post-mortem.

While the construction of the flyover had been going on for the past four years, all activity had come to a halt for the past six months, the DC report adds.

An investigation has been launched by the Sholavaram police and a case has been registered under section 337 (Causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) and 304 (ii) of the IPC against the contractor.
