The National Election Commission (NEC) took cognizance of the violent remarks of ‘shooting’ and ‘hanging’ made by YSR Congress president YS Jagan Mohan Reddy against Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu, and has asked an FIR to be filed against Jagan for the same. The NEC has also asked State Election Commission (SEC) to send a detailed report.

According to TV reports, the NEC viewed the remarks of ‘shooting’ and ‘hanging’ of Chandrababu Naidu as a violation of Election Code of Conduct, and has reportedly asked the SEC to submit a detailed report with evidence (newspaper clippings, videos etc) of Jagan’s remarks.

Speaking to TNM, returning officer Prasanna Venkatesh confirmed that he had received a communication from the Election Commission on Tuesday night.

"I have received a communication from the EC, but I have not gone through it properly. We are busy with the polling today (Wednesday), and I will go through what I received, later in the evening. Following this, we will take further action as directed," he said.

On August 3, during his Nandyal by-election campaign, the YSR Congress chief said that there is nothing wrong in shooting an immoral person like Chandrababu.

Jagan said, “Naidu should be shot dead for cheating the people of Andhra Pradesh and for his false promises and double-speak on every issue. Naidu made so many promises to farmers, women, minorities and unemployed youth, but failed to deliver. He is very treacherous. He is like a kaliyug rakshas,’’TNIE quoted him saying.

Following his remarks, the Telugu Desam Party leaders complained to the SEC and the police.

Despite receiving a notice from the SEC for his remarks, on August 11, in another road show held in Nandyal, he said that Chandrababu Naidu deserved to be hanged for not fulfilling his electoral promises.

“What should one do to a person who had stolen votes by duping people with promises and then going back on them? Such a person deserves to be hanged,” he said, DC reported.

Dissatisfied over the inaction of the SEC and Chief Electoral Officer Bhanwar Lal, the TDP leaders approached the NEC.

Following the death of MLA Bhuma Nagi Reddy who won the Nandyal constituency from YSRCP and defected to TDP, the bye-poll was to be conducted.

While Bhuma Bhramananda Reddy is the candidate of TDP, Silpa Mohan Reddy is YSRCP candidate.
