A BJP functionary was brutally hacked to death in the wee hours of Tuesday and the police suspect it to be a case of political rivalry.

On Wednesday, the Hebbagodi Police arrested five persons including Bommasandra Town Municipality President Sarojamma of the Congress for the murder of Srinivas Prasad alias Kithaganahalli Vasu.

The other accused include 22-year-old Madhu alias Spike, a resident of Singena Agrahara, Manjunath alias Karpoora, an Anekal resident, Murali alias Appu (20) and Narayanaswamy, both residents of Rampura.

“The prime accused, Gym Manja is still at large. We suspect it to be politically motivated killing but the true motive can be determined only after thorough interrogation,” said Amit Singh, Bengaluru Rural SP.

A special team, which was formed to investigate Prasad’s murder raided Sarojamma’s house and she was taken into custody as the police suspect her son, Gym Manja and his friends and two of his relatives, to have killed Prasad.

“Four police teams are looking for Manja. There are also a few other accused in the case and information is being gathered about them. We also suspect that Manja had taken support from senior political leaders in the area. The murder was planned in advance,” Singh added.

The senior police officer said that the assailants were aware of the difficulties in attacking Prasad as he was always surrounded by his friends and supporters.

“The prime accused had tried to hire contract killers but due to the note ban, they were cash strapped and could not execute the plan,” police sources said.

The CCTV footage near the college, where the murder occurred, helped identify the suspects as they were seen in the area on Monday evening.

Prasad’s family members helped the police identify the men in the footage.

Kittaganahalli Srinivas alias Vasu, a member of the Bommasandra Town Municipality, was hacked to death with machetes on Tuesday in his car near Bommasandra BTM College.

“Prasad was the popular choice and had the backing of the members of the municipal council but he could not become the President of the council as the seat was reserved for a woman. He had challenged this in the Karnataka High Court and the hearing for the case was to be on the day he was murdered,” police added.
